How To Get Your Private Keys Out Of DoughWallet

DoughWallet is using BPI39 mnemonic differently{:rel="nofollow"} than e.g. BreadWallet and it seems no one really understands what they are doing. But the source code is available and with Xcode the wallet can run in a simulator. This allows you to enter the recovery phrase from e.g. your iPhone and to find the private keys by debugging the app.

compile and run:

download the source (I've added two adjustments: use https to download the OpenSSL archive; cast timestamp)
select an iOS simulator (e.g. iPhone 6) and press run
if there's a compiler error at bf_opts.c (Implicitly declaring library function 'exit' ...), replace exit with return and re-run

after the simulator started DoughWallet:

press restore from backup and add your backup phrase
add a pin (doesn't need to match your original pin) ... you should see now a doge address and don't worry about the empty wallet¹
now kill the app by double-click the home button and swipe the app (maybe this have to be done two or three times when Xcode doesn't stop at the Breakpoint)

in Xcode:

open the BRBIP32Sequence.m file (BreadWallet / BreadWallet / Models / Entities)
set a Breakpoint at line 251 (click on 251); the line should contain "return a"
start the app via Xcode again

Xcode stops at line 251 and you see a list of variables.
Open 'a' and you should see something like this:

[0]  __NSCFString * @"Qnumberw1thNumb3r5andLeTTeRs..." 0x00006080000cfe48

This Q number is the private address and you should keep it save.

In case you have used more than one address you have to adjust line 212 and extend the bracket from [@(n)] to [@(n), @(n + 1), @(n + 2)]
After restarting the app the 'a' variable shows now e.g. three private keys.

¹ I didn't figured out why the balance is not updating. To feel safe you can unplug your computer from the internet while the simulator is running.

You could just download https://iancoleman.github.io/bip39/ for offline use (see the bottom of the page) and enter your phrase to find your keys. I don't know about Doughwallet, but for Breadwallet you use BIP32 with the path set to m/0'/0 (for receive) and m/0'/1 (for change). Maybe Doughwallet is the same.

Thanks for the instruction, unfortunately i do not have a mac to run xcode.
Anyway taking advantage of dogecoin, i move all my doge on a paperwallet few months ago 🙂

Me, I'd just refuse to run Dough in the first place, but meh. 🙂
